Norman Teeling
Norman Teeling was born in Dublin in 1944. He trained in the National College of Art & Design under Maurice MacGonigal PPRHA, Carey Clarke and John Kelly RHA, after which he spent twenty years teaching for the Animation industry, where he enjoyed a successful career as a background artist on numerous films and TV series and went on to produce his own animated feature films. He has also produced a number of newspaper illustrations and an Irish cartoon strip, as well as set designs for the Abbey, Gate and Tivoli Theatres in Dublin.
Teeling is regarded as one of the great plein-air oil painters and exponents of representational painting in Ireland. He has a unique ability to capture and then improve on the beauty of nature. Like many Impressionist painters the hallmark of Teeling's art is in his masterful treatment of light. His use of colour and tone in such a harmonious way in these contrasting outdoor scenes is repeated in his quiet interiors, in which his lush pigment and thick brushwork combine to create a sense of stillness and privacy that compels the viewer to take pause and reflect.
As an Irish landscape artist, Teeling is noted for his romantic Impressionistic style of plein-air painting. He now works mostly in oils, although he has produced a number of watercolours. His oeuvre encompasses all the genres including: landscapes, still-life interiors, portraiture, genre-scenes and history painting. In the 1990s he completed a monumental series of ten works commemorating The 1916 Rising, Easter Week, April 24th to April 30th, 1916. This suite of oils was acquired by An Post in 1998 and is now on permanent display in the G.P.O.
Over the past thirty five years Teeling's works have been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions in Ireland and the U.K. Venues have included Oisin Gallery, Howth Art Gallery, Blue Leaf Gallery, Magil Fine Art, The Oriel Gallery, Gorry Gallery, The Art & Print Gallery, Co. Meath and The Barbara Stanley Gallery, London. In addition he has participated widely in group shows throughout Ireland and abroad. He is represented in several public and private collections. He is a member of the recently launched Oil Painters of Ireland, a new artists group which aim to promote the merits of traditional and representational art to the Irish public.
