Ciaran Lennon (b.1947)
Ciaran Lennon was born in Dublin in 1947 where he still lives. He studied at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin from 1963 to 1967. In 1993 he became an elected member of Aosdana. Since the early 1970's Lennon has had numerous solo exhibitions in museums and galleries within Ireland and abroad including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Douglas Hyde Gallery, the Chester Beatty Library, the Ulster Museum and the Orchard Gallery in Derry. Other galleries include the David Hendricks, the Oliver Dowling, the Kerlin and the Green on Red in Dublin and the Fenderesky Gallery in Belfast.
Lennon's work has been included in exhibitions representing contemporary Irish art, both at home and internationally including: A Sense of Ireland in 1980, London, L'Imaginnaire Irlandais in Paris, the Pursuit of Painting in IMMA, Irish Drawing in the Drawing Centre in New York and in 1993 Lennon represented Ireland at the San Paulo Biennale in Brazil. His works can be found in National Gallery of Ireland, Ulster Museum, IMMA, the Arts Council of Ireland, Bank of Ireland, Contemporary Irish Art Society, Dublin City Callery,The Hugh Lane, Trinity College, the O.P.W., Dublin and many collections in Europe.
In 2007 Lennon work on his "Colour Collection" led him to focus on single paintings, what he calls
"lenses" for which he is now well known "Liquid/solids, liquid acrylic, solid acrylic, reflective, transparent etc. They reflect the room - not like the traditional lens into another world, I like the way the metal makes the paint react - like the bone, the fleshiness of the paint on it"
