Sean McDermott
Born in London in 1930 of Irish parents, Sean McDermott came to Ireland at an early age, finally settling in Dublin where he now lives. He has been drawing for as long as he can remember. As a teenager he was a regular contributor of cartoons to “Dublin Opinion” and for three years produced a weekly adventure “Strip” for the “Sunday Press”. Though largely self taught, he enrolled at the National College of Art where he became a pupil of Maurice McGonigal R.H.A., a witty and inspiring teacher who later became President of the R.H.A.
For many years Sean worked in advertising for companies in Dublin, London and Copenhagen, finally becoming marketing manager for a large retail group before returning to painting full-time.
Many of his paintings have been reproduced as prints and greeting cards. A versatile artist, his subject matter includes a wide spread spectrum from landscape to portraiture and still life, showing equal mastery in oils, watercolour, pastels and charcoal.
His equestrian commissions have included many “Legends of the turf”, such as Dawn Run, Nijinsky, Northern Dancer, Secretariat and Sunday Silence. His portrait commissions have included two former Taoisigh, Jack Lynch T.D and Sean Lemass T.D and Grace Kelly (Princess Grace of Monaco) for Mrs. Frances Kelly, Washington D.C.
